But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then it shall come about that those whom you let remain of them [will become] as pricks in your eyes and as thorns in your sides, and they will trouble you in the land in which you live.
God commanded Moses to keep a diary of all the wanderings of the Israelites and chapter 33 is the recounting of those wanderings. After going over all the place that God has brought them from and to, God commands Moses to remind the Israelites that they are to drive out the inhabitants of the Promised Land completely and obliterate their places of worship and implement of worship — like statues and whatnot. This verse is the consequence if the Israelites fail to obey that command.
In my life, as a believer, I have a similar situation. All the sins that I allow to remain and do not take pains to remove from my life are as pricks in [my] eyes and as thorns in [my] sides, and they … trouble me. Those sins interfere with my ability to see clearly and impede my progress in following God. The only solution is to eject them from my life and to get rid of anything that was involved in aiding and abetting those sins.
Thank You, Father, for keeping a record of where You take me and periodically bringing me back to revisit that progress. Thank You that the solution to the sin in my life is simple: kick it out. While simple, it is not easy. Please strengthen me for the task and to see it through to completion.
