Now Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel after him; and he judged Israel ten years. Then Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
I confess, Elon seems to have the least in common with my Savior. No deeds are recorded, no lineage, nothing really to distinguish him among the judges.
Elon means “mighty”, according to my concordance, and Zebulun means “exalted.” And it is here that I begin to see a glimmer of something that describes my Lord. Jesus is God Almighty (Revelation 1:8) and has been exalted (Acts 5:31). But there is one more parallel.
Elon has nothing about himself that really warrants pausing in my reading. Except that his lack of being exceptional reminds me of what Isaiah wrote about Jesus: He has no [stately] form or majesty / That we should look upon Him, / Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him (Isaiah 53:2). Elon reminds me that I do not have to have done anything astonishing or miraculous or even particularly noteworthy to be effective for God.
I knew a man who told me that the best witness he had ever heard was not the one that involved God redeeming a person out of terrible things like addiction and whatnot, but the one that involved a life lived for God from youth to present day. There was, to him, something compelling in the faithfulness of God taking hold of a life from its earliest days and guiding that person through all of the pitfalls and dangers that life presents. I am the person that man described. God took hold of my life early and has kept me from many of the pitfalls into which I could have fallen. Some I have walked into knowingly and am without excuse, but God has kept me and led me faithfully so long as I was submitted.
Tola and Elon are a similar witness. There is nothing particularly noteworthy about either of those judges. But they still judged Israel . They were still noted as having walked with God and done what He called them to.
Father, thank You for Elon’s witness. Thank You that his legacy is simply that of obedience to You. No miraculous victories recorded. No prolific fathering of children. Just a life submitted to You and to Your calling. Please work in me to make me submitted to You and Your call on my life.
